Letting go, Latching on, and Living it up

Learning when to let go and when to keep trying

One of the toughest and most important lessons in life. It applies to everything we do: work, relationships (of all kinds), etc. It’s hard to distinguish when you should let go and when to keep going. There are tell tale signs that can help guide you in the right direction. It’s impossible to get it right 100% of the time. We sometimes give up on the wrong things. For example, wanting to be a ballet dancer but giving up because you feel like you will never be good enough. You can’t let yourself strike out before giving it a fair chance. It’s ok to dream and go after your dreams, even if it will be hard and competitive. I have always been a goal oriented person. I have always thought that I should go for everything completely and never give up. But I’ve learned that there are times that I should let go (not give up), and not push so hard. I learned the hard way but sometimes that’s the best way to learn. Nothing like a relationship to teach you this very valuable lesson. Love sometimes is not enough. This lesson does not just apply to romantic relationships but also friendships.

Signs that it is time to let go:

  • You’re the only one trying.
  • There is nothing to gain anymore.
  • You’re not happy and it is only causing you pain.
  • You’re interfering with the other person’s happiness. In other words, you’re being selfish.
  • You’re trying to fight for something that isn’t even there anymore. Be realistic.

Signs to keep trying:

  • You haven’t given it a fair enough shot.
  • You haven’t gone for it completely.
  • You let pessimism and realism get in the way of your aspirations.
  • You are being too selfless. You have to be a bit selfish and go after what YOU want.
If it makes you happy, do it.

I think once people let go of what is bringing them down and strive for what they want, the world will be a happier place. It can’t be taken too literally though. There will be times work will make you miserable and the person you love pisses you off. Along with the good, there will also be bad days. And unfortunately, this is a lesson best learned through trial and error. But on the bright side you can let someone/something go and if it is meant to be, it/they will find its way back to you. What is lost, can always be found.
